Although most Graduate Temporary Visa (subclass 485) applications seem straightforward, there are some important pitfalls to watch out for when lodging an application.
Timing
Timing is a critical factor when lodging your application as it must be lodged within 6 months of course completion. This is from the date your results were declared and course requirements were completed, not from graduation.
Course Duration
Course duration is equally important when lodging your application. You must have completed your course after at least two academic years of study (equal to 92 weeks) and have physically been in Australia for at least 16 calendar months to complete it. Talk to us about how these dates are calculated and the accurate source of these dates.
Australian Federal Police Requirements
Australian Federal Police clearance is a mandatory requirement to be completed before lodging a Graduate Temporary visa. Police clearance must be current, must have been applied before lodgement and all applicants 16 years or older should be part of the application.
English Language
English language testing must have been attempted prior to lodgement of your application, or you will risk the refusal of your application. Students may choose any of the prescribed English Language tests prior to lodging their applications (including IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, OET, or the C1 Advanced Test).
Health Cover
Health cover must be maintained for the duration of your stay in Australia and must cover you for any medically necessary treatment, including emergency transportation.
Documentation
Accurate documentation must be provided when lodging your application, including a letter of completion from your CRICOS-registered course which confirms your exact dates of study.
Applicants must apply for the correct stream of application, and choose carefully between Graduate Work Stream and Post Study Work Stream, each has its own benefits and risks. Talk to us to get more information and develop a better understanding of what is more suitable for your circumstances.
Your chosen occupation must be supplied at the time of applying, be part of the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, and be closely related to the qualification you’ve just received. Additionally, your skills will need to be assessed and confirmed by a relevant representative for your nominated field.
Finally, applicants must check if they have a Section 48 Bar on them prior to lodging an application for a Graduate Temporary visa. This may be applied if you’ve previously received refusal or cancellation on a previous visa. Section 48 is a complex issue and we recommend that clients contact us to determine their individual circumstances.
