Skilled Visa

Australia’s workforce offers numerous opportunities for skilled workers from across the world. If you’re trained in an area that Australia deems valuable – and can prove that you’re proficient in it – then you may be eligible for a Skilled Visa which can come with numerous benefits.

Depending on the type of visa you apply for, you may be able to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia and your family may be able to come with you.

To be eligible for a skilled visa you must:

Skilled Occupations and a Skills Assessment

When submitting your Expression of Interest, you must show that your occupation is on the relevant skilled occupation list for the type of visa you’re applying for. It’s also highly recommended that you obtain your skills assessment before submitting your interest, as assessments which are obtained after you’re invited to apply cannot be relied upon.

Your skills assessment must also be issued by the relevant assessing authority, so please check this against your occupation to ensure your assessment will be accepted.

How do I get invited?

To be eligible for any Skilled Visa, you must be invited to apply by the Australian Government and SkillSelect. To let the government know you’d like to apply for a visa, you need to submit an Expression of Interest form via SkillSelect.

You must be aged under 45 when we invite you to apply for the visa, so please make sure there is enough time before your 45th birthday for your invitation to come through.

The Points Test

Some types of skilled visas are points-tested, so you must be able to show that you’ve hit a minimum number of points to be invited to apply. Points are granted based on prior experience, education, and English levels among other things. To check how many points you may score, feel free to use the points calculator provided by the Australian Government.

Types of Skilled Visas

  • Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189)

This visa allows invited applicants to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia. You’ll also be able to:

  • Enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme, Medicare;
  • Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia;
  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years;
  • If eligible, become an Australian citizen.
  • Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)

This visa has many of the same benefits and requirements as the Skilled Independent Visa, however you must have been nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency. When you complete your Expression of Interest, government agencies can see your submission and may choose to nominate you for the visa.

  • Skilled Regional Visa (subclass 887)

This visa is for those who’ve previously lived and worked in a specified regional Australian area as part of a previous, eligible visa. It allows you to:

  • Work and study anywhere in Australia;
  • Sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence;
  • If eligible, become an Australian citizen.

However, you must currently hold an eligible visa, lived for at least 2 years and worked for at least 1 in a specified regional Australian area. The Australian Government will also request that you comply with the conditions of your current visa.

  • Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485)

This visa has two streams based on your situation after graduating from an eligible Australian institution.

The Graduate Work stream is for students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations that Australia needs at the time. It’s usually for up to 18 months, however, Hong Kong passport holders may stay for 5 years.

The Post-Study Work stream is for those who have recently graduated with a degree from a CRICOS registered course. It’s usually for between 2 and 4 years, depending on your qualification, (Hong Kong passport holders may stay for 5 years).

  • Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (subclass 482)

There are four types of TSS visas; Short-Term Stream, Medium-Term Stream, Labour Agreement Stream, and Subsequent Entrant.

The Short-Term Stream and Medium-Term Stream is for employers to fill a role they are unable to fill with an appropriately skilled Australian worker, giving international professionals the opportunity to temporarily work in Australia. The Short-Term visa usually allows you to stay for up to 2 years, while the Medium-Term is up to 4 years.

The Labour Agreement Stream works similarly, however, this visa is related to government positions and allows you to stay for a maximum of 4 years.

Finally, the Subsequent Entrant Visa allows family members to come to Australia alongside a professional applying for the TSS visa, and will allow them to stay for as long as your visa lasts.
